Windmill History and Description

The octagonal Windmill tower is one of the most unique cottages in Cape Cod and the Islands. Hear the waves and sounds of the clinking sailboats in Little Harbor directly in front of the Cottage when the wind is up. A long private driveway in the forest leads to the locking gates and path to the windmill. The windmill was converted to a guest cottage in 1900, the complete windmill apparatus and all of the wooden vanes still safely stored away. The 5 story windmill has been in the same family for 3 generations and was originally built by Joseph Story Fay, a pioneer of Woods Hole. Ocean views to the front from every floor and the adjoining secluded forest. Modern kitchen and bath. 1/2 bath in Master bedroom with 1870s four poster queen bed and large armoire... period antiques throughout and beautiful beams, triangle windows and floors. Spiral staircase brings you to the second floor with two single twin eurotop xl Beautyrest beds that can be joined together as a king and a living room with large picture window looking over Little Harbor and Martha's Vineyard. A path through the garden towards Little Harbor takes you to Woods Hole road and the sidewalk minutes from the magical Woods Hole Library. A car is not necessary as you can walk or bicycle ride to almost everything. 7 minute wallk to grocery store. There is a trolley to Falmouth. Woods Hole Ferry Steamship Authority dock is a 5 minute walk from the Windmill. Walk to the ferry and be in Marthas Vinyard in 45 minutes.

Nobel Laureates, prestigious scientists, ambassadors, writers, dancers and musicians have all stayed at the Windmill cottage as well as a long list of discerning people who have enjoyed her rare character.

The Windmill is not winterized and is only available for rent June, early July, late August and September. We typically arrange 2-4 rentals a summer with several returning guests - many with connection to MBL and WHOI.

Rental fee is $1995/week. 2 and 3 week rentals welcome.

Wood's Hole Windmill Stay

We had a wonderful time at the "Windmill". The most charming "cottage" imaginable. Great views, within easy walking distance of the town and beaches. I would highly recommend it.

The harbor views and sounds of fog horns were outstanding and the windmill was a delight!

Our family (artists, musicians, cowboys, & writers) had a terrific two week stay at the enchanting old Windmill in Woods Hole! It was a remarkable and sentimental wedding vacation and we will return! We used all the comfortable beds plus the air bed for the fun escapade in the 5th floor cupola. Even the Little Harbor view and sounds from the 4th floor - 4 poster bed was amazing at any waking moment! We would recommend this place to friends or relatives who love adventure and enjoy the historic character and the quaint experience of the woods. The description and the photos are very accurate and detailed, although, the experience of being there is far more impressive and delightful! The owner, Robert, was friendly and quite helpful with anything we needed and suggested wonderful places to visit. In Woods Hole we loved the Shining Sea Bike Path, MBL (Marine Biological Laboratory), kayaking in Great Harbor - Devils Foot - and the Gut, Nobska Lighthouse, trips to Martha's Vineyard, Whale Watching, and sailing the "Liberte" 74' schooner from Falmouth Harbor. Our favorite restaurants and shops were Pie in the Sky Bakery & Cafe, Captain Kidd Old Bar and Restaurant, and Landfall Restaurant, with visits to the great Woods Hole Market, Under the Sun Gifts, and Clam Man Fish Market in Falmouth. Thank you Mette and Robert! Save a month for us next year in the "Windmill" and come stay with us anytime in the Black Hills of South Dakota! Bravo!

Iconoclast's Delight

I will start by saying the Windmill isn't for everyone, which is to underscore its idiosyncratic charm and sense of adventure. It is, as one might overlook from the photographs, a vertical experience, but so worth every upward (and then downward) step. The space is exquisitely furnished, well-lit, amply outfitted, and inviting. Wonderful cookware, comfortable bedding, a somewhat rustic but adequate full bath downstairs. The location could not be more perfect, with easy walks to beaches, restaurants, bakeries, the ferry to Martha's Vineyard, etc. There's no heat or a/c, but these are small concessions for the unique pleasures of this enchanted property.

Magical Adventure

Our family vacationed in the Windmill Cottage for two weeks at the end of this summer. It was just what our family needed.... some quite time together detached from the world. Our two sons, ages 10 + 12, spent many hours reading and playing together in the top floor cupola while watching the harbor activities from the window. We loved the spiral staircases and the proximity to the bike path, library, harbor and beaches. We would return in a moments notice. The owners were very helpful and called shortly after our arrival to make sure we found everything in good order. They also provided a list of many nearby activities, restaurants and beaches for us to visit. The ferry to Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven, on Martha's Vineyard, is a short walk into town. The cottage is a bit rustic but has all the essentials. It is going to be difficult to top this next year.

A wonderful experience!

Our family stayed in the Windmill Cottage in early June 2016 and had a wonderful time. The cottage is charming and unique, and if the fireflies would have been out, we would have believed that we were in a fairy tale. Since the windmill is obviously old there are some quirks, but the beds, linens, and kitchen amenities were outstanding. My husband thought that the grill was the best that he had ever used, and there was everything we could have possibly needed in the kitchen, since we like to cook at home. You can grill outside, and use the great kitchen, then have dinner at the outside table, or inside if the weather isn't perfect. Both have great views. There are in fact, great views from every floor! The bikes were great and access to Woods Hole and the bike path could not have been better. Views from the cottage are fantastic, and we were even treated to a double rainbow from the cupola following a passing rain shower. The space is very vertical as one other reviewer commented, but what do you expect from a windmill! We would return in a moment. If you are concerned about air conditioning, just don't go there. When you open the windows in the Windmill the air sweeps up out of the harbor and through the windmill, which is wonderful. The ocean breeze is fantastic! The owners are super accommodating, and I hope to meet them in person in the future. You will be very happy if you stay here and interested in a unique vacation.
